“Lighting One Candle” by Yosa Buson
The light of a candle

Spring twilight
The Haiku gives me the idea about a brief moment in time, and it is my mood board based on this haiku.

The three words that come up to my mind are fire, transient, and continue. Based on the three words, I draw three graphs for each of them.
For "fire," I drew the sun at first because the Fire makes me feel hot, so I think of the sun. Second, I drew the shape of the flame. Finally, I drew many dots to show the seed of fire flicker and glow.

For “transient”, My first inspiration was a solar eclipse, which is a short process from something to nothing. The second inspiration comes from the clock, in which the hands are narrowed until they disappear. Finally, I drew a gradual line. It is very ethereal, from the beginning of heavy to disappear at the end.

For “continue”, I drew two circles interlaced with each other, which made me feel dynamic and infinite. For the second one, I drew a repeated pattern and half of a square, hoping to make people feel that the next pattern is about to appear. Finally, I drew a Tai Chi Bagua graph, which seemed to be unstopped turning.

Then, I combined the above nine patterns to create a rough draft.

I planned to present it in the form of carving paper. Because I wanted to show the times are gone, I used black to represent time and white to represent the passing of time, so I planned to cut the black to show the white.
Here's all the material I used for the poster: two squares of paper (one black and one white), a pencil, a paper-knife, a ruler, and a compass.

After I draw the draft on the black paper, I started cutting.

To improve my process, next time, I will use a white pen to do the draft on the black paper but not use a pencil any more. Because it was tough to see the line clearly, it made me cutting very slow and always cut in the wrong place.
