Open a fence door without a handle

Updated: Mar 10, 2021

I made this design because my house's water meter is on the home's outside wall, but a fence blocks it inside of the garden. So the staff in charge of recording the water meter had to ask us to open the garden fence door from the inside so that he could record it. Sometimes no one was home and missed the staff's arrival, and it caused a delay in our water meter recording. So I started planning to improve this problem.

At first, I tried to remove the lock, but the door kept opening and closing without a lock on windy days. So I started thinking about letting people on the outside can touch the lock and open it.

Then I made a plan......

You need the following:

  • a nylon rope

  • a pendant with some weight

  • a command hook.

  • a pair of scissors

Step 1: Tie the string to one end of the lock, making sure to leave enough of it to extend outside.

Step 2: Glue the command hook to the doorframe.

Step 3: Tie a ring and a weight pendant to the other end of the rope to make sure it doesn't blow back into the fence.

Step 4: Hook the ring to the command hooks on the door, then the pendant will not knock against the door and make noise.

All done!By adding the lock's functionality, we can avoid replacing it with new locks, or even installing a double-sided lock. Now the meter recorder can open the gate and read the meter himself.
