kiki's delivery service — chess piece

Kiki's delivery service is a 1989 Japanese animated film written, produced, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, adapted from the 1985 novel by Eiko Kadono. It's an animated film that's been around for a long time. I've seen the film twice and each time it gave me a different idea.

When I was in primary school, I saw this movie for the first time. At the time, I admired Kiki's ability to fly and talking with animals. However, when I watched this movie for the second time in my high school, I felt a lot of different things and got some inspiration.

A day in my high school, I noticed that many friends around me had good drawing skills, but I didn't good at drawing. So I was confused about whether I am able to be a good designer in the future. But when I watched the movie again, I found that everyone has their own strong points. Kiki envied those children in city who have a good life, but the children envied Kiki's ability to fly at the same time.

From the days Kiki cannot fly well by using witches' brooms, to the days she can used a random brushes to fly. I think Kiki is no longer lost, she has discovered her unique talent. Therefore, I decided to stick to my dream become a designer and learn to draw in my spare time.

It is my mood board for the chess piece design.

Based on Kiki's image, I found her features is short black hair and flowing bangs, paired with red bows, and the flowing dress. I chose the left bottom one to make a real paper model. Because the simple body can highlight the features of its head.

I used the following materials for making models: a pencil, a rule, a scissor, a double-sided tape, and some used paper.

At first, I tried to make a model with measure the scale. But it looks so unbalance, especially the head size and the body size looks like half and half.

To solve this question, In my second model, I scale the head for 1 cm, the bows for 1 cm, and the body for 4 cm. Also the width for 2.5 cm.

The second model looks better, I want to make it with a flowing dress, but it was difficult to stand. So I planed do the model based on it and maybe add a base for it.

This is the 3D design in Sketchup. But the hair is not looks flowing, so I planned to develop it.

This is the developed one, I made its hair more flowing.

As Kiki is a witch, I made a hexagram base to show witchcraft. And I was not made a face for Kiki, because I wish anyone had the courage to grow up like Kiki.
